Lesson 11: Wrap Up

  • Go back to your thoughts/ideas about technology and mobile devices. Has anything changed as a result of this experience?
When computers first came out I took a class at SAC to learn about them to learn how to write programs. I became very interested in technology. I can remember when I first got my home computer the monitor was this huge thing it took a lot of space. I love being on it exploring all the different programs that came with it. I did a lot of learning on my own and that is how I know so much about certain programs. When the first cell phones came out that you could take pictures and having access to your email was great. Now the cell phones are just like a mini computer on the go. You can do so much with the newer cell phones that are coming out and they are getting bigger in size. What I have seen is that more and more people are relying on their cell phone to access so many things. If their battery goes out watch out they don't know what to do to get their information during that time. It's beginning to look like that is what we live for.  Young children as early at the age of 1 are being exposed to technology by way of tablets, I Pad, etc. They are listening to music, watching videos, and playing games on it. It is a way of entertaining themselves. For me to relief my stress I get on my table or cell phone and sometimes by laptop and just look at all the different sites that I like to get into and I forget all about my worries. I enjoy it very much.

Lesson 10 Challenge

San Antonio City Website - Local -www.sanantonio.gov

I have had several patrons come in and ask for different agencies from our City webpage. I have had to show them how to look for city jobs so I show how to get into the city's website and then to City job vacancies. There have been times patrons wanted to know when the city was going to collect brush or bulky items. There again took them to the cities website and looked under the department of Solid Waste Management. I tend to use the city's website a lot.

Texas State website - Texas.gov

We tend to get a lot of patrons using this site in order to renew their license or to get a driving record. I already have this site bookmarked for easy access. I personally don't get to many people asking for information from a Texas website. Being that I am a children's librarian I don't get to many reference questions in that area.

Federal website - IRS.gov

Starting mid January to April 15th this site is used quite a bit. Since IRS didn't send out booklets this year we have been referring patrons to go into this site to get their information. Also we didn't get all the forms needed so there again we had to refer to patron to get into IRS to download and print the necessary forms.

These are the most common sites that I tend to use a lot. I also have used the Election Precinct Locator when we have had voting.

Lesson 7 Part 1 Challenge

The Infernal by Mark Doten

Find Me by Laura Van Den Berg

I find that Hoopla is another site that gives the people other options to find what they are looking for. Its gives people access to movies that might not be able to afford Netflix or to be able to rent a movie. It can watch the movies in a varieties of devices that they can download from. They don't have to wait for the library to be open they can access it anytime of the day or night.

Lesson 8 Part 2 Challenge

I went looking for the audio book "Chasing Fire by Nora Roberts". My first search was in the OverDrive site enter the title and the book came up right away. My second search was in the Hoopla site put in the title "Chasing Fire by Nora Roberts" and it did't have her book at all.

The other books I was trying to find is "Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith. My search in OverDrive was easy as soon as I put in the title if came up. Again with Hoopla I had no luck with this book.

It seems that OverDrive has a better selection of books on hand.

Lesson 6 Part 1 Challenge

Describe how social networking has made an impact on your life.

I would say that social networking (Facebook) has made an impact on my life but I have connected to some old friends that I hadn't talk to for a very long time. I also find that there are a lot of other people with my same last name that some of them could be related to me. Also many times I will find out of things that are happening with my family before I find out in person. I also keep up with friends who I have work with and have retired now. It also keeps me informed of birthdays of friends and family and any other events that are happening. I also get to see pictures of everybody.

Lesson 6 Part 2 Challenge

Social media can have a negative effect

I have a Facebook account and I see many posting of different things. I just one of a man hitting a small child and knocking him down many times. Is this person looking to be caught or what. The comment on this piece was "Hopefully someone knows who this person is so that he can be punished.
Some people can be so stupid pardon my expression. But you see a lot of this where they incriminate themselves.  By posting this video people are going to be mad if they come across this person who knows what they will do to him.

Lesson 5 Challenge

I improved as I went along. My first Challenge was the Hollywood where I received a score of 46%. My second was the Diamond Challenge where I scored 61% a little better. The last one was the Earthquake Challenge and I scored 84% much better. Finally I got the ideal of what we were looking for in the words.

Lesson 2 Part 3 Challenge: Outlook

When I first got hired and got my email in Outlook I had to get to know my way around the program. When I had to establish my signature I had trouble at firs I had to ask for help. But once I got started I had no problem putting it together.

Lesson 3 Part 2 Challenge

This would be another reference when patron is looking for certain books on certain topics and this site is every easy to get too and gives a lot of information for the patron to explore. There is this one mother that comes in and likes to look for craft books. She would love to look at this site on Hobbies & Crafts.

The two LibGuides for Staff that would make a difference for them.

One of them is Circulation: Since there is always things that come up that we don't deal with a lot and we tend to forget what we are supposed to do. So this libguide will give us the answers that we are looking for when we come to one of those situations. The other one is the Millennium Libguide this is also a refresher on some of things that we might not use all time in Millennium. These two guides are a good source to fall back on to when we are not sure of what we are suppose to do.

Lesson 3 Part 1 Challenge

Legal Form+Landlord Tenant+Rental Application Form

I had a patron come into the library looking for a rental application. We used to have a book that had all kinds of forms. Since we don't have it anymore I suggest that we go to our Database and look under Legal forms. Since she was the Landlord I looked under the tab for Landlord Tenant. From there we search for the rental application form that took us right to it. The patron was very impressed and she said that now she knows where to go for other legal forms.
